A charming small oil by Nicholson which could be of the South Downs or similar.Nicholson was a portrait, still life and landscape painter. Studied at Bushey under Herkomer and the Academy Julian where he befriended the painter James Pryde. They worked together on several printing projects.
Nicholson work is now highly regarded in whatever subject he undertook. As a portrait painter he had a very successful career, yet today his landscapes and still lifes are his most sought after works. This particular work is a very quick sketch in which the artist has perfectly captured a view on the Downs.
