Marie Bashkirtseff was Russian but moved to Paris where she studied painting at the Academie Julian. Her parents were wealthy Russian nobels.Troubled by illness all her life, she exhibited at The Paris Salon in 1880 and thereafter until her death 1884.She wrote extensively , including a diary which she started aged 13yrs. It was published after her death and was a huge success. This remarkable self portrait was painted towards the end of her life.
