Silverpoint on card, signed ,4 1/2ins x 5 1/2ins (11.5cms x 14cms), inscribed on reverse with sitters names, ages , location of Brighton and date of 1829.
Born in Zurich , Notz was a portrait painter producing life size works and miniatures. Unusually he sometimes worked in silverpoint , which produces a very fine finish and tone. This technique originally developed in the renaissance was developed over the years and used in more recent times by the Pre -Raphaelites, Alphonse Legros and Joseph Stella. The technique requires the priming of a card. A thin silver wire is then inserted into pencil type holder and then used in the same way as a pencil. Notz has applied several layers to get the beautiful tones in the portrait.
